The USS Nautilus (SSN-571) offers one of the most unique and impressive experiences in New England. Permanently berthed in Groton, Connecticut (the Submarine Capital of the World), this groundbreaking vessel was the first nuclear-powered submarine and the first to travel under the North Pole. Visitors can climb aboard and take a self-guided audio tour through the tight quarters, control room, torpedo room, and crew areas. The adjacent Submarine Force Library & Museum has excellent exhibits, models, and artifacts that tell the full story of American submarine history. It’s fascinating for all ages and especially appealing to history buffs, families, and anyone who loves engineering and naval innovation.
