Lucy the Margate Elephant has been delighting visitors since 1881. Standing six stories tall and weighing 90 tons, this architectural oddity was originally built as a real estate office to attract buyers to the newly developing island. Constructed entirely of wood and covered in tin, Lucy features a howdah (riding platform) on her back that offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can take guided tours through her legs, body, and head, learning about her fascinating history — including surviving fires, storms, and multiple relocations.Lucy is a true Jersey Shore icon and a National Historic Landmark. She’s fun, photogenic, and completely unique — a perfect quirky stop for families, architecture lovers, and anyone who enjoys classic American roadside attractions.
