Louis' Lunch is a true American culinary landmark and the recognized birthplace of the hamburger sandwich. Founded in 1895 by Louis Lassen as a small lunch wagon, the restaurant has been family-owned and operated for over four generations in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1900, a busy customer asked for something quick to eat on the go. Louis placed a ground beef patty between two slices of toast — and the hamburger was born. Today, the Lassen family still serves the burger exactly the same way: hand-rolled from a proprietary blend of five meats, flame-broiled vertically in the original 1898 cast-iron grills, and served on toasted white bread (no buns!). Only American cheese, tomato, and onion are allowed — no ketchup, mustard, or other condiments. The tiny, brick building on Crown Street seats about 30 people and feels like stepping back in time. It’s a quick, no-frills experience that delivers a delicious bite of food history. Alongside the classic burger, you can enjoy potato salad, chips, homemade pie, and local Foxon Park soda. A must-visit for foodies, history lovers, and anyone who wants to taste the original American hamburger in its birthplace.
